STEIN WILLIAM J. Age 95, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bill passed away on July 16, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Mary Paiano Stein (deceased, 1980) and loving companion of Jean Shumacher. He was the beloved father of Barbara Snyder and Kathie (Steve) Villalpando; beloved brother of the late Louise Summers, the late Irene Fameli, the late Alice Stein and the late Patricia Stein; beloved grandfather of Lisa Snyder Cebulash, Lori (Chris) Stanley, Todd Snyder, Leslie Snyder and Victoria Villalpando. Bill is also survived by many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Born on September 25, 1922, he was the son of the late Alphonse and Alice Ryan Stein. Bill served honorably in the United States Army from 1940-1945 and spent many years fighting for our country: first in Panama for two years, and in World War II he fought in Germany, France, and Belgium. Upon his discharge, he returned to Pittsburgh where he resided until his death. He was an avid sports fan and loved his Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins. He attended many games at Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium and could recite sports statistics better than most sportscasters. He loved to read almost as much as he loved to play cards. In the early 80's, he developed a love for ballroom and line dancing. DeMILO LAWRENCE LOUIS (ORLANDO) (1923-2018) Age 95, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, died peacefully at home with his loving wife at his side, after a profoundly beautiful end of life. He was born to the late Angelo and Philomena DiMaiolo in Ambridge, PA. A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of St. Valentine Catholic Church. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Sharon, whom he loved for over 48 years; his adult children, Debbie DeMilo Afzali and Doug (Sue) DeMilo; and dozens of nieces and nephews and their offspring. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his seven siblings. A proud American and veteran of WWII, Lawrence served our country for three years in the US Air Force in the South Pacific. Lawrence had a distinguished management career in the life insurance industry in the Southwest, where he was director of advertising and public relationsin several corporations. He especially enjoyed being the editor and illustrator of many publications, and the voice of numerous radio commercials. He also was a teacher and entrepreneur in advertising and public relations. Lawrence spent much of his childhood in the library reading, especially the encyclopedias from cover to cover. He enjoyed being a Boy Scout in his youth, and led a Boy Scout troop as an adult. He coached Little League, and was a leader in Junior Achievement. He led a very active life, and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Lawrence's love of learning and curious mind were only rivaled by his amazing sense of humor. He was funny and witty! Lawrence was well-read with a focus on civilization, wars and American history and he had an avid interest in current affairs. With a thorough self-taught knowledge of all classical music, Lawrence spent many hours recording and listening to it. In Arkansas, he supported the symphony and was best friends with the conductor. Lawrence liked conversation, analyzing everything and always had a few words to say. Lawrence was a talented artist who began sketching as a child and then became a designer at heart. As a boy, he designed futuristic automobiles and airplanes with features that came to pass during his long lifetime. His keen eye for beauty, color and detail were incorporated into the building of their current home. Lawrence was a lifelong train enthusiast and photographer. He and Sharon really enjoyed riding steam trains, and the process of searching for just the perfect train car or other item for Lawrence's meticulouslydesigned train layouts. Lawrence had a beloved pet, a Lakeland Terrier named Miss Angel Face, who passed away four years ago. Angel Face was Lawrence's faithful friend and companion for many years, bringing him daily joy and laughter, especially while Sharon was working. CASEY EILEEN A. (MERLINA) Age 77, of Lawrenceville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 15, 2018. Eileen was honored to be married to her best friend Edward Casey, for 56 years and to raise four children. She enjoyed cruising the world with Edward, and one of her favorite memories was of them riding a Jeep through Aruba together. Eileen spent her summers camping, riding in her golf cart, and zooming along Pymatuning Lake in her pontoon boat. Above all else, Eileen enjoyed spending time with her family. Christmas was her favorite holiday when all her children would return to her house in Lawrenceville wearing their Christmas pajamas. Eileen was thrilled at having the opportunity to take her children on several vacations including a cruise and a trip to Walt Disney World. Eileen will be forever remembered by her husband Edward Casey; children Edward (Tracy), Elaine, Michael (partner, Keith Claypool) and Colleen (Eric) Wolfe; grandchildren Erin Casey and Shawn (Amanda) Casey and great-grandchild Braiden. BATTAGLIA HENRY "HANK" JAMES, Jr. Of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully on July 14th, 2018. He was 86. Hank was born in Pittsburgh on September 29, 1931 to parents Henry James Battaglia, Sr. and Rosalie F. (Soukup) Battaglia. Hank grew up in Pittsburgh, including Northside, Brookline and Mt. Lebanon. When Hank was in middle school, the family relocated to Montclair, NJ, where Hank attended Montclair Academy. The family had a summer home in Cape May where Hank developed a deep love for the seashore, which he carried with him throughout his life. While attending Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Hank met Sophie Regina Bucko. After graduating from Lehigh, the couple married, and Hank then served in the US Army, stationed at the NORAD facility in Newfoundland. After Hank left the Army, the couple moved to Canfield, OH, where Hank landed his first job out of college as an assistant buyer with Youngstown Sheet and Tube. While in Canfield, Hank and Sophie had four children. In 1966, the family moved to Upper St. Clair, PA, where Hank joined a small sales firm, selling equipment and repair parts to steel mill operations. After a number of successful years there, Hank joined a Pittsburgh-based steel fabricator and erector as VP of Sales, quickly becoming President of the company. Hank eventually left Pittsburgh and married Leona Lee Guzik in 1986. The couple was married for 26 years, during which Hank led and managed businesses in Houston, Wichita, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Las Vegas, where he spent the final 13 years of his more-than-50-year career in the steel business. He was instrumental in obtaining and managing high-profile fabrication and construction projects and driving the growth of the businesses he managed, while distinguishing himself in the industry as a highly respected, reliable and honest business partner. Hank was a friend to everyone, whether it be iron workers, executives or customers. Hank retired at age 75 and eventually moved back to Upper St. Clair where he resided at Friendship Village until his final days. He was preceded in death by his brother David and his daughter Susan Battaglia, along with first wife Sophie and wife Lee. Hank is survived by his children, Gregg Battaglia (Kim), residing in Cincinnati; Judy Henry (Doug), residing in Potomac; MD and Mark Battaglia (Diane), living in Mt. Beloved husband of 27 years to Amy Elizabeth Joy Raymond (Bittner); dog dad to Buddy; son of the late Robert and Adelaide Raymond, previous owners of Century III Dodge; brother of Robert (Debra) of South Park, Terry Ann of South Park, Gerry (Elisa) of Peters Twp., Mark (Deborah) of Peters Twp., Gary (Cassie) of South Park, and Renee of Pleasant Hills; son-in-law of Antoinette (the late Walter) Bittner; brother-in-law of Christopher (daughter Haven), Scott and James; also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was blessed to receive a liver transplant, but became sick again nine months later. He fought tirelessly for seven years until his passing. John loved traveling, camping in West Virginia with friends, riding his motorcycle, and his pets. Visitation for John will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, Pleasant Hills. KAMPAS WALTER GEORGE (BLUB), Jr. Left us on July 15, 2018, after 86 years as a native Pittsburgher. Born on September 26, 1931, Walter was the third child of Walter and Anna Kampas. After learning to drive trucks at the age of 12, and graduating from West View High School, Walter joined his father's refrigerated delivery business delivering meat to grocery stores throughout the Pittsburgh area. As a young man, Walter joined the army and served his country in the Korean war, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. After receiving an honorable discharge from military service, Walter rejoined his father's trucking business. Soon after returning to civilian life, Walter met his wife and lifelong partner of 61 years, Joanne Altemus. Walter and Joanne married on June 15, 1957, and raised three sons, who now reside in the Pittsburgh area with their families: Walter (III) and his wife, Lil, with grandsons, Michael and Alex; Ronald and his wife, Stephanie, with granddaughters, Anna, Makayla and Julia; and David and his wife, Bonnie, with grandchildren, Amelia and Noah. In the early 1970s, Walter founded a new trucking business Butler Refrigerated Delivery with his longtime friend and business partner, Larry Galcik. After many years of hard work, success, and growth, Walter and Larry sold their business in the mid-1980s. Following the successful conclusion of their trucking business, Walter and Larry collaborated on other ventures including real estate management and a retail business. Walter and Joanne enjoyed a lengthy and comfortable retirement, including travel and dining internationally, as well as visiting and entertaining their many friends in their Summer and Winter home towns of Zelienople and Naples, FL. Walter was active in various civic groups and organizations at times throughout his life including 60-year membership in the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #716. To his countless friends and acquaintances, Walter is known as a fiercely loyal friend, and a man of unfailing honor and integrity while keeping a deep sense of humility and an insightful sense of humor. Walter is known to his family as a dedicated, honorable, and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by all. Walter was predeceased by his parents and sister, Matilda, and is survived by his wife, three sons, seven grandchildren, and sister, Anna May (Sissy) Charles. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at St. Peter's Reformed Church, 320 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople, PA 16063, followed by a celebration of life luncheon for family and friends.
