RANII CARMELLO A., M.D. Age 93, of Fox Chapel, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Beloved husband of the late Hilda (Sabatasso) Ranii; loving father of Joseph (Joyce) Ranii, Carla (Frank) Gaskill, Charles (Monica) Ranii and Louis C. Ranii; cherished grandfather of Robin and Amber Ranii; brother of James F. (Lillian) Ranii, and the late Jennie Ranii, George A. Ranii, D.D.S.; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dr. Ranii was born on September 1, 1922, in Blawnox. He graduated from Aspinwall High School and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He served proudly in the army as a captain at Clarke's Air Force Base and a physician in the Philippines. For 50 years, Dr. Ranii maintained a private practice in Aspinwall and West Penn Hospital. He was the original country doctor, while making house calls in the middle of the night was part of his ordinary routine. He had a real heart for serving people. Dr. Ranii was well respected for his patronage to his native Italian and Sicilian paisanos. He traveled the world extensively. He was dedicated not only to his patients but also to his immediate as well as extended family both here and in Sicily. His passion for baseball included stints in the sandlot leagues as a youth and was a pitcher for Pitt and was notably interviewed by fellow alumnus, Myron Cope. He will be missed by all who knew him. Friends received Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, from 2-6 p.m. at the WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall, where a Parting Prayer will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Scholastica Church, Aspinwall.
