MATTY ALBERT Age 88, formerly of Monongahela, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2016. Born in Monongahela on October 30, 1927, to Maria Misercola Matty and Antonio Matty, he was the youngest of nine children. Albert is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Margaret "Peggy" Louise; three children, Albert C. Matty and wife; Janet Miller and husband; Dr. Jeffrey Matty and his wife; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Caitlin; and great-grandchildren, Shepherd and Olive. At 18 years of age, Albert wanted to serve his country during WWII; however, because of a debilitating childhood injury, he wasn't eligible to join the Marine Corps. Seeking a path to helping in the war effort as his four brothers had done, he became a proud member of the Merchant Marines traveling the world during the end of World War II. Throughout his life, Albert was a supporter of Merchant Marine veterans, their history, and contributions to WWII. Albert worked as a tool and die maker at the Fisher Body Pittsburgh Plant in Dravosburg, PA for 42 years. He was a member and former senior vestryman at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Monongahela, PA. Albert's favorite pastimes were watching sports, reading about civil war history, listening to the radio, and the daily newspaper. To all who knew him, he was the kindest friend and loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. A private family memorial took place on Monday, February 1, 2016, at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES in Bakerstown, PA. Albert will be buried in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
