
MEYER SISTER MARY HELEN, SC Age 95, died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on February 25, 2016. A native of Pittsburgh, Sister Mary Helen entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1939, from Assumption Parish in Bellevue. Preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Kathryn (O'Brien) Meyer; a brother, James T., Jr.; a sister, Ruth Dorrier; a maternal aunt, Sister Anna Mary O'Brien, SC. She is survived by nieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from Duquesne University and a master's degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame. Sister Mary Helen was a teacher in elementary and secondary schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In 1967, she was assigned to teach biology and chemistry at Greensburg Central Catholic High School in Greensburg, a position she held until 2012. Sister Mary Helen was also an instructor in chemistry at Seton Hill University during summer sessions of the 1960s. A recipient of numerous honors for meritorious work with science students, Sister Mary Helen was honored by Seton Hill University with an Excellence in Teaching award in 2013. Of her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Mary Helen stated, "A religious vocation is a gift from God. It is an invitation to service. Serving in the field of education has brought me in touch with many students who have enriched my life."
