WATSON, RSM SISTER MAUREEN (MARY ELIZABETH) A Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 74 years, died at the Convent of Mercy, on Monday, August 24, 2015. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was 93 years old. Daughter of John G. and Claire (Moran) Watson, Sister Maureen entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Paul Cathedral Parish in Oakland in 1936, and made final vows in 1941. Sister Maureen earned a Bachelor's degree from Mount Mercy College (Carlow University) and a M.S.Ed. in Guidance from Duquesne University. She taught at several area Catholic schools including St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Vincent and St. Xavier in Latrobe, St. Peter McKeesport, Mount Mercy Academy and Immaculate Conception in Washington, PA. After retiring from teaching, Sister Maureen was office manager for the weekend college at Carlow University for more than ten years. She also volunteered at Mercy Hospital and later at the Convent of Mercy. Even though both her sight and hearing were failing, Sister Maureen, a woman of deep faith, participated in community prayers and kept track of what was going on each day. You could always count on a straightforward answer from her, a no fuss needed person. Her sharp wit seemed to get even better as she aged. When you'd tell Sister Maureen about something that was happening in community or world news, she would often get a funny little half-smile and come out with an especially astute observation. She was, as the Scripture says of Nathaniel, without guile. Preceded in death by her parents; sister, Kathleen Bowes; and brother, Monsignor James Watson; Sister Maureen is survived by a brother, John Watson of Pittsburgh; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Thursday, August 27, 2015, from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 28, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213, or the Carlow University Scholarship Fund. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
