WILLIAM J.W. BROWN BORN IN STA...
WILLIAM J.W. BROWN Born in Staten Island, NY, on June 7, 1938. Died in Pittsburgh, PA, on June 12, 2019, age 81, of complications from prostate cancer. A graduate of the Catholic University School of Law and Yale Law School, Professor Brown worked for the firm of Beekman and Bogue on Wall Street and taught back at Catholic University before coming to Pittsburgh in 1968 to teach at Pitt Law School, where he specialized in federal, corporate, and estate taxation. His scholarship included books on tax strategies for separation and divorce and corporate taxation. Upon his retirement with Emeritus status in 2000, an anonymous donation of $1 million was made in his honor. He went on to serve for six years as director of the graduate tax program at Duquesne University's school of business. Despite significant health challenges, he continued to teach at Pitt, Duquesne, and Carlow until he was 78. Beloved by his students, he made taxes fun and won three Excellence in Teaching Awards from Pitt Law (1994, 1999, and 2008) and the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award (1991). He was twice elected president of the University Senate and served on the University Press Board and many other committees, including as chair of the Affirmative Action Committee and the Tenure and Academic Freedom Committee. For at least thirty years, he commuted to Pitt by bicycle. Bill was serially maniacal, throwing himself wholeheartedly into various pursuits over the yearstennis, art collecting, sailing, marathon running, pottery making, model boat building, golf, wooden kayak building, vintage car racing, icon writing, furniture restoration, and painting landscapes and portraits of his beloved Beagle, Knox. Perhaps his greatest artistic creation was the home he built in Rector, PA, largely with his own hands. In 2017, he published "Canticle of Returning," a memoir about his Catholic faith. He served as a 40-year board member and past president of the Center for Hearing and Deaf Services (HDS) of Pittsburgh, from whom he received the Harlan J. Rozenzweig Appreciation Award in May 2019. He was also a past board member and president of Chamber Music Pittsburgh and a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Pittsburgh Junta, the Board of Governors of the Yale Club of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Tax Club, and the Pittsburgh Golf Club. GEORGE ARTHUR LOOS AGE 90, PAS...
GEORGE ARTHUR LOOS Age 90, passed away in the Bethel Park home that he built and lived in for the past sixty-six years on Thursday, June 13, 2019. Arthur was born to Margaret and John Loos. He grew up in the East Pittsburgh area as the baby brother to older sisters Georgia and Ruth, and brother of John Bernard. Arthur began a lifetime of being a hard worker in his youth, before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1945. Arthur proudly served his country as a member of the China Marines, serving overseas in post-WWII Asia, assisting in the surrender and disarmament of Japanese troops. After returning to the Pittsburgh area, he married his one true love Estelle, and created a loving family with her, together raising their five children. Arthur was a steelworker for over thirty years with J & L Steel on the South Side of Pittsburgh until his retirement in 1979, often supplementing his income as a mechanic, taxi driver and bartender. Although he retired as a steelworker, Arthur went on to use his mechanic skills and established the business JAKS House of Bends in Washington, PA with his two sons Kirk and James. He worked side by side with both sons for almost forty years, only slowing down in the last few months of his life. Arthur was proud that he and his wife Estelle raised five successful children, of which two sons and one daughter are thriving business owners, one daughter has a distinguished career in civil service, and another daughter successful in the medical field. After the untimely passing of his wife Estelle, Arthur remained faithfully hers in the home they made together, often cooking his renowned spaghetti sauce for his family, and immensely enjoying the abundant wildlife that lived in his yard. Arthur was preceded in death by both of his parents, Margaret and John; his sisters, Georgia Hilger and Ruth Reynolds; his brother, John Bernard Loos; his wife, Estelle; and one granddaughter, Alexzandra Danielle Loos. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Menozzi, son, Kirk Arthur (Roberta) Loos, son, James (Cathy) Loos, daughter, Jacqueline (Mark) Mingrone, daughter, Arlette (Kevin) Gray; as well as eleven of his remaining grandchildren, Michelle Menozzi, Mary Catherine O'Connor, Kirk D. Loos, Christopher Loos, Jaminique Milliren, Colton Loos, Gabrielle DelVecchio, Luke Mingrone, Ryan Gray, Megen Booher, and Joel Gray. Arthur is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arthur will be missed tremendously, but the Force will be with him, Always. RAYMOND KNAVISH AGE 77, OF WHI...
RAYMOND KNAVISH Age 77, of Whitehall, originally of Carrick, passed away on June 14. He is survived by his cherished wife of 56 years, Patricia (Shay) Knavish; children, Christine Stewart, Raymond J. Knavish, Timothy (Lisa) Knavish, Diane (Nicholas) Campano, and Brian (Stacey) Knavish; and grandchildren, Cory (Briana) Campano, Jordan Campano, Kylie Knavish, Mia Knavish, Megan Campano, Alex Stewart, Evan Stewart, Abbey Stewart, Samantha Knavish and Maria Knavish. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary McCarthy Knavish Passante and Leonard Knavish; stepfather, Elmer Passante; and siblings, Leonard "Bud" Knavish, Mary Joan Koenig, Rita Claire Koenig, and John "Jack" Knavish. Ray was a lifelong master of corny jokes. A few of them were even funny. He proudly worked at Duquesne Light Company for 42 years, starting as a meter reader, working his way up and ultimately becoming a director. After retirement, he worked at Financial Advantage Federal Credit Union, and later, as a community sports columnist with the South Hills Record. A devout Catholic, Ray was the ultimate family man. Never one to just sit back and watch, Ray was an organizer and a leader. Not only did he get involved in the activities of importance to his kids and grand kids, he often took on leadership positions in organizations ranging from Little League teams to the Pittsburgh Alliance for the Mentally Ill to the Baldwin Wrestling Boosters. The same love and support he showed for his wife and children he later showed to his beloved grandchildren, all of whom adored their Pap Pap. Ray also was big on ice cream and "sneaking" kids off for a cone or milkshake. He loved going to breakfast and ordering eggs, complaining about the eggs, then ordering them again the next time. If there was a 50/50 raffle within a mile of Ray at any given time, he'd find it. Ray was fascinated with maps and geography and knew a shortcut to everywhere. A passionate and extremely superstitious Pittsburgh sports fan, Ray loved the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. He especially cherished the memory - and the "magic" - of Bill Mazeroski's 1960 World Series-winning home run. Ray was an avid golfer who, in his own words, wasn't good at golf, but the "Knoulish" golf outings he organized are legendary. He was adored by everyone who met him, and he will be dearly missed. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2019 at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 301 Curry Hollow Rd., in Pleasant Hills. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 16 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish.
