JAMES V. HALEY "JIM" James V. “Jim” Haley passed away peacefully on August 5, 2019, at the age of 92, with his dearly loved wife of 50 years, Marcia, by his side. Jim was born on December 10, 1926, in Schroon Lake, NY. At age 16, he graduated from high school and entered the Naval V-12 Program at Cornell University. His family loved to hear the story of how he set off for college during WWII at a time of fuel shortages and gas rationing. He had to hitchhike and arrived in Ithaca in a truck carrying livestock. After completing the V-12 Program, Jim entered the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1949 as a Regimental Commander near the top of his class. Subsequently, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology on two occasions, obtaining Masters Degrees in Naval Engineering and Electronics and in Nuclear Engineering. Jim served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy for almost 20 years, receiving The American Defense Medal, The WWII Victory Medal and The National Defense Medal. After attending the Navy Submarine School in New London, CT and qualifying in submarines, he served aboard submarines in the Pacific. Following his Navy career, Jim joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh and became Engineering Manager for Westinghouse's worldwide nuclear fuel business. From 1974 to 1978 he was General Manager for Wyoming Mineral Corporation, a Westinghouse subsidiary in Denver, CO. Returning to Pittsburgh in 1978, he and his wife Marcia made their home in Edgewood. Jim retired from Westinghouse in 1990, but became restless with retirement and soon was working full time as Operations Manager at DRV Incorporated. Upon retiring from DRV in 2006, Jim devoted his life to his family, his friends, and his ever-growing group of grandchildren, to whom his was known as “Jimpa”. His quick wit, keen intellect and love of a corny joke endeared him to family and friends alike. TERESE (SCHIRMER) PICCOLI After 90 years, the journeys of Terese Piccoli came to a close on July 26, 2019, at the home she shared with her sister, Annemarie Cuff, in Chadds Ford, PA. Terese was a devoted daughter and sister; a much-loved mother, grandmother, and aunt; a respected teacher, businesswoman, politician, community organizer, author, and editor; and an advocate for education, peace, and women's rights. Terese was born in Newark, NJ, the eighth of nine children. In the tradition of her family, she attended Catholic schools, where she thrived socially and academically. At Benedictine high school, Terese excelled in sports, notably basketball and swimming, and experienced her “first loves.” In 1946, she became the sixth Schirmer to matriculate at Mt. St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS, and it was there that she, a homecoming queen, met a soon-to-be valedictorian from nearby St. Benedict's College named William Piccoli. They married in 1952, moved to Pittsburgh, and remained together until Bill passed away in 1984. Terese raised seven children and sometimes called out their names in order until she reached the name she needed: “David-Steven-Andrew-Carol-Philip-Martin-Vincent!” She read to her children regularly, surrounding them with her love of the written word. From 1969 until 1987 she was a book reviewer, and The Pittsburgh Press published over 100 of her reviews. In the 1980s, she taught English at the Community College of Allegheny County and the University of Pittsburgh, presided over the Northland Public Library Foundation, and played primary roles in the Beginning with Books Foundation, the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Theater, the Pittsburgh Literacy Council, and the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors. After her self-professed “awakening to feminism” in the 1960s, Terese became politically active, regularly taking her children to League of Women Voters meetings and enlisting them in stuffing envelopes, passing out flyers, and donning political sandwich boards. In 1977 she earned a master's degree in public administration from the University of Pittsburgh and cofounded MC Consultants, a management consultant group supporting small businesses, especially those run by women and people of color. In 1980 she ran for state representative in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. In 1990 Terese was among the first Peace Corps volunteers to serve as teachers in then Czechoslovakia. After three years in Prague at Charles University, she taught for a summer in Egypt and for a year at the Universitas Katolik in Bandung, Indonesia. From there, she taught for a year in Hohhot, China, at the Inner Mongolia Polytechnic University, for two years in Pohnpei at the College of Micronesia, and for a year in Ghana with the International Foundation for Education and Self-Help/Teachers for Africa Program. In 2000, Terese returned to the United States to become “Grandma T,” now journeying at home with her children and their families: David Piccoli and Matthew, Cara, and Laura; Steven Piccoli and Vanessa King and Daniel; Andrew and Kathleen Piccoli and Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Christopher; Carol and Michael Carey and Meagan, Bridget, and Benjamin; Philip and Anne Piccoli and Ashleigh and Joshua; Martin Piccoli and Scott McComb; and Vincent Piccoli. In her last 19 years and with the people she loved most, Terese continued to create experiences built on principles that guided her entire life: family, education, understanding, and acceptance. Memorial donations may be made in Terese's name to Mt. St. Scholastica (mountosb.org) or the League of Women Voters (lwv.org). A service at St. Paul's Cathedral in Oakland is being planned for a future date. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

SYDELLE KESSLER Sydelle Kessler passed away in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the age of 90. Sydelle was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Isadore and Rose Radin. At just seventeen years old, Sydelle became a fashion stylist for Mademoiselle Magazine, and later worked for Irving Serwer Advertising. Along the way, she opened a jewelry store, Shoplift, in the Theater District and pursued a professional career in classical singing. She studied with the famed singing teacher Chaliapin, and was childhood friends with Beverly Sills. Sydelle later became a popular operatic performer. She married prominent neurosurgeon Dr. Laibe Kessler in 1957. After moving to Pittsburgh, Sydelle became a dedicated supporter of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Opera, and Public Theater. In 2000, Sydelle and Dr. Kessler inspired the Notes from the Heart Music Program, a summer camp for special needs children at The Woodlands. While supporting a busy physician and three children, Sydelle also had a gourmet catering business called Sweet and Savory, and a radio program on WQED, where she often performed. The Pittsburgh community remembers Sydelle for her salons, where she and Dr. Kessler would entertain legendary artists and musicians. Sydelle was known for her elegance, sense of fashion, good humor, and profound appreciation for the arts. Sydelle was preceded in death by her husband, Laibe; her brother, Saul; and her sister, Beatrice. She is survived by her three children, Adam (Lisa), Emily (Seth), and Philip; and her six grandchildren, Hannah, Philip, Isabel, Louis, Lucas and Chloe.
