MILLER AUGUST V. Age 93, of Mt. Lebanon, on March 29, 2017, at Concordia of the South Hills with his family by his side. Born August Valentine Miller on March 21, 1924, in McKees Rocks, PA, he was the son of the late Anthony and Theresa Babinger Miller. Known to all as Gus, his beloved wife of 68 years, Bernadette Stroup Miller, whom he married on May 3, 1947, at St. Mary's Church in McKees Rocks, died on January 6, 2015. Gus was an Army Veteran, having served his country during World War II as a Medic with the 139th Airborne Engineer Battalion (17th Airborne Division). He served in France, and then Belgium, where he fought in Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, before advancing to northern Germany until the end of the war and during the occupation, receiving an honorable discharge in December, 1945. On his return home, Gus worked for the US Veterans Administration, where he provided job counseling to returning wounded veterans, while attending Duquesne University. In 1947, Mr. Miller embarked on a successful insurance career that would span more than 40 years. In January 1965, he founded August V. Miller, Inc., an independent, multiple line insurance agency in Pittsburgh, where he served as President until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Miller was recognized within the independent insurance industry as an early adopter of business-based technology to provide enhanced service to its clients. He received many industry awards and was active in numerous civic, business and insurance organizations. He and his wife, Bernie, traveled extensively throughtout the US aand Europe, attending insurance meetings and conferences. Mr. Miller was a devout member of St. Bernard Church, Mt. Lebanon, for more than 67 years and was a member of the St. Bernard Men's Group and St. Vincent De Paul Society. Over the years, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Austrian American Cultural Society and Chartiers Country Club. Gus is survived by his children, Carol Ann Crowley (Dale E.), Collier Twp., PA, Dr. James A. Miller (Tamie), Temperance, MI, Lynette M. Tucker (F. Michael), Albany, NY, and Judith M. Baehrle (William A.), Collegeville, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian E. Mitarotonda (Jennifer), Ashburn, VA, Gregory M. Mitarotonda (Melissa), Englewood, CO, Douglas C. Mitarotonda (Rachel Reichenbach), Burlingame, CA, Katie E. Deacon (Lorne), Gibsonia, PA, Megan T. Petersen (Kevin), Jersey City, NJ, Gabriel J. Miller (Kelly), Rayong, Thailand, Eileen F. Spiro (Matthew) New York, NY, Kathleen B. Tucker, Arlington, VA, Alyson E. Baehrle and Katelyn A. Baehrle, Collegeville, PA; his step-grandchildren, Richard P. (Deborah) Crowley, Manhattan, KS, Jennifer R. (Michael) Dzera, Meadville, PA, Peyton, Quinn and Jack Starner, Temperance, MI; and his great-grandchildren, Zachary and Aiden Mitarotonda, Cora, June and Samuel Mitarotonda, Hudson Mitarotonda, Paxton and Oliver Deacon, Michael Petersen, Mikaela, Ethan and Preston Hladik, Esmae Dzera, Elizabeth, Jonah, Timothy and Andrew Crowley. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in- law, Anthony P. and Eileen P. Miller of Bethel Park, PA; and his sister-in- law, Judith M. Stroup of Atlanta, GA; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Bernadette and Joseph Hemphill of McKees Rocks, PA and his brother-in-law Thomas A. Stroup, Jr. of Stony Point, NY. The family would like to thank the staff of Concordia of the South Hills, as well as Viaquest Hospice, for their compassionate care over the past several years.
