TICKNOR ARTHUR W. Of Sewickley and Keene, NY, passed away September 29, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born in Englewood NJ, October 20, 1934. He and his wife Mandy were married for 55 years. Art had a business career that spanned more than 30 years, and he was known as the man who could turn around an ailing factory. He held a bachelor's degree in engineering science from Harvard University, and a master's degree in business administration from the Harvard Business School. Art started his career at Union Switch and Signal (US&S) when the Pittsburgh based company was a division of Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO). He then served with American Standard Inc. for more than two decades after it acquired US&S. During that time, he first held divisional management positions in the company's Heat Transfer Division and was then named Group Executive for its Industrial Product Group with operations in the U.S., Europe, and South America. He returned to Pittsburgh to lead Union Switch and Signal and American Standard's worldwide Signaling and Fluid Power Products Group as Corporate Vice President and Group Executive. After US&S was sold to Ansaldo, an Italian firm, Art was appointed President and CEO. In 1990, Art was appointed Chairman of US&S, with consulting responsibility to Ansaldo for the oversight of international operations in Ireland and Chile and other new initiatives. He retired from US&S in 1991. He had an early foray in politics when he ran for City Council of Pittsburgh with John Tabers as mayor in 1969. In retirement, Art was Executive in Residence, Technology Management, at Duquesne University, School of Business Administration. Art enjoyed time with his family hiking, biking and canoeing in The Adirondack Mountains of New York; and skiing on slopes from Buffalo to Lake Tahoe. Art and Mandy also enjoyed the arts, and attended the Pittsburgh Symphony for many seasons. Art served many communities. His common sense approach provided stability and success that lifted all those involved. In recent years, he was chairman of the Vestry at All Souls Chapel in St. Hubert's, NY in the Adirondack Mountains. He served two four year terms as Chairman of the Board of Pressley Ridge. Art is survived by his wife, Mandy. They have four children, Sam (with Margie in Madison, New Jersey), Art (with Susan in Hood River, Oregon), Rob (with Dorothy in Evans Head, Australia), and Margie (with Doug in Mars, Pennsylvania). They have 12 grandchildren. There will be a memorial service for Art at Sewickley Presbyterian Church, 414 Grant St., Sewickley on Monday, October 5, 2015, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations in his name to Pressley Ridge. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
