PATRICIA ANN "PAT" "TISH" COSENTINO A lifelong resident of Castle Shannon, on July 18, 2019, at the age of 76. Pat was born in Pittsburgh to the late John and Louise (Cil) Crogan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony (Tony) Cosentino. Pat was employed for many years by the Laurel Financial Group, from where she retired last year. She loved her work and considered her coworkers to be like family. Pat loved Pittsburgh, and was an avid fan of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. She was an enthusiastic card player, and was always up for a game of pinochle, especially with her grandsons. She also loved to read, and was a regular visitor to the Mount Lebanon Library, where she participated in a book club. One of Pat's favorite things to do was dine out. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Pat is survived by her son, Tony (Kate) Cosentino; daughter, Angela (Ron) Kirk; brother, Jack (Bonnie) Crogan; and grandsons, Nicholas Bronder, Jacob Bronder and Matthew Cosentino. MARGARET "PEGGY" ELIZABETH (VORTISH) MATZ Age 88, of Holiday Park, died peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 4:25 p.m. surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was born in Wilkinsburg, PA. on June 8, 1931. She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1949. She was an alumna of both Seton Hill University and the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Masters of Social Work. She completed her degrees while working full time and raising her two sons and two daughters. Early in her career, Peggy worked for Children and Youth Services of Allegheny County. She worked for years within the Kane Nursing Home system, primarily in McKeesport but eventually at every location as a consultant after retirement. She was involved for many years with the Order of the Eastern Star (Wilkinsburg Chapter #103, Pitcairn Corinth Chapter #229), ultimately acting as Worthy Matron from 1960-1961. She was very committed to Christ's Lutheran Church, serving on church council, as a liturgical deacon and as head of Christian education. Peggy is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Alexander Matz. They were married in December of 1958 after meeting at a church picnic volleyball game. Avid travelers, Peggy and Al enjoyed camping from coast to coast, including a month long trek through Alaska. She spent her last 20 years as a snowbird between Pittsburgh and Ocean Resorts on North Hutchinson Island, Florida, where her favorite pastime was reading a good book by the ocean. A lifelong Pirates and Steelers fan, Peggy was known to root enthusiastically for both. She was preceded in death by her parents, Blaine and Dortha (Dininger) Vortish, and her sister Patricia (Richard) Baxmeier. She is survived by her brother Phillip (Nancy) Vortish; sons Eric (Alicia) Matz and Curtis (Kelly) Matz; daughters Karen (Thomas) Palmer and Kristin (Jason) Ropchock; 10 grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Marion was born September 20, 1929 to Frank and Ida (Mallinger) Mandel on Nicholson St. in Squirrel Hill. Marion's greatest love was for her children, Steven (Lori) Blattner, Joe (Jane) Blattner, and Eileen (Peter) Sposato; and stepson, Tom (Tania) Wein; along with her grandchildren, Robin (Jake) Galik, and Michael Blattner, Frank and Annie Sposato, Rachel (Tieff) Wein Madden, Hanna, Dacota and Noah Wein; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her four siblings that she loved dearly, Joseph, Saul, and Martin Mandel, and Ruth Mandel Ganz Fargotstein. She was also predeceased by her husband of 16 years, Richard J. Blattner, and father of their three children, and her second husband of 34 years, Victor M. Wein, originally of Clarion, PA. After the passing of her 1st husband, Richard, Marion at the young age of 35, became an active real estate agent for Blanche Greenberger Real Estate Agency, making many friends and contacts that she carried late in life. Her life was full of friends and those who loved her from her Class of June 1947 at Taylor Allderdice, where she spent many hours helping with their reunions, her Jewish War Veteran's relationships as their long-standing communications chair, her love for music, and mostly her love of her Jewish faith. GEORGE J. REED Age 84, recently of Midland Park, NJ formerly of Pleasant Hills, PA passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, July 19, 2019. Born in Cannonsburg, PA, George and his wife, Myrna raised their two children in Pleasant Hills, PA. In 2013 they moved to New Jersey to be closer to family. A Chartiers HS graduate (1953). George graduated with BS in Education in 1957 from Clarion University. He served in the US Army (1956-58) and was in the Reserves. One of his great loves was teaching, he was an educator of Math and Sciences, in the Brentwood and McGuffey School Districts for 42 years, during which time he was actively engaged in coaching football. You would often hear him ask How do you spell Math?- FUN!. Another one of his loves was basketball. George was an athlete and earned the nickname of Hardwood Ace for dominating the basketball court. During and after college he played semi-professional basketball regionally; he was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his friends, daughter, and son-in-law. He was a huge fan of all the Pittsburgh sports teams especially on Sundays cheering for the Steelers with his family. He was a faithful servant and an active community leader serving as Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Council President, The Lions Club President and Treasurer, and active member of the American Legion. The love of his family was paramount. Surviving is his devoted daughter, Bethel and her husband, Roy Borgeson of Wyckoff; his grandchildren, Hannah Haas, the sunshine of his life, Henry and Anne Marie Borgeson; his nephew, Terry and grandnephew, Luke. Predeceased by his loving wife, Myrna of 57 years in 2016, and his son, Bradford Scott in 1979. KAY (DAUGHERTY) SCHMIDT Age 83, of Glenshaw, passed at home with family on Saturday, July 20, 2019, following a courageous battle with dementia and brain injury. She was born to Robert Doc and Mildred (Staub) Daugherty on New Year's Eve 1935. She married Albert J. Schmidt, her best friend, chief accomplice, and love of her life, on July 18, 1959. She is loved and missed by her sister and brother-in-law, Mitzie and Bill Lindner; her children, Robert (Kathy) Schmidt, Beth Schmidt, and Patty (Matt) Raymond; her grandchildren, John Borthwick, Stephen Russell, Alex Schmidt, and Hannah Kay Schmidt; and a troop of nieces and nephews. Kay was a retired secretary/office manager, an active volunteer, an avid puzzle solver, a remarkable wife and mother, and a reluctant housekeeper. Her absence will be felt in the neighborhood, at church, at the gym, at card club, at a variety of antique stores, at Denny's, and at home. She will be remembered fondly forever by cousins, high school friends, the Scouts group, volleyball ladies, bowling friends, and bowling kids. Devoted husband of Nancy Kerr Osmianski; loving father of Adam (Joy Ellis) Osmianski; son of the late Marie Porter; nephew of the late Elizabeth, Rosella, and Joseph Osmianski who helped raise him; brother of Donna Yocum and Yvonne Bethel; son-in-law of Jack and Carole Kerr; also survived by sister-in-law, Patty (Neill) Brady; brother-in-law, Jeff (Lisa) Kerr; and aunts, uncles, many nieces and nephews. Otis was an avid fan of hockey and college football particularly the Pittsburgh Penguins and West Virginia Mountaineers. He enjoyed a good Maker's Mark Manhattan and had a wonderful off-brand sense of humor. Otis was a generous, kind and selfless person who was devoted to taking care of his family. KENT A. EDWARDS Age 69, of Pittsburgh and Confluence, passed away on July 20, surrounded by his family after a valiant medical struggle. Kent was born in Sharon, PA, on September 3, 1949 to Reese and Geraldine Edwards, both deceased. He attended Kent State University, graduating with a double major in Philosophy and Architecture. After 30 years as an architect in Ohio as well as Pennsylvania, where he served as President of AIA Pittsburgh, Kent and his wife, Cathy, started a Community Development consulting firm. He was also a proud member of Leadership Pittsburgh, Class VII. Kent is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Cathy McCollom; his sons, Ben (Sarah) and Adam (Kate); daughter, Jennifer Dunn; his two adored grandchildren, Lily and Hunter; as well as his sister, Karen Thompson and brother-in-law, Bob of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Kimberly and Richard Cravy and Michael and Debbie McCollom, as well as many nieces and nephews. Kent was a man of few words, but each one counted. He will be sincerely missed by all of those lucky to have known him. Friends will be received Wednesday, July 24, at the GEORGE A.
