ROBERT KALINA Robert Kalina, age 80, of Monroeville passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2020, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Diane Kalina; loving father of Lisa Bowser (Gary), and Bobby Kalina (Tanya). He was a loving and devoted grandfather to Kaitlyn, Matthew, and Ashley Good and Riley and Brett Bowser. He was the son of the late Norman and Margaret Kalina; and brother of the late Marlene Berger (John) and Norman Kalina (Martha). He worked at Eat n Park for 45 years, starting as a busboy and worked his way to a Regional Director. He was loved and respected not only by his employees but by everyone that knew him. He had a heart of gold! Some of his accomplishments included serving as President of Parish Council at North American Martyrs Church, and also serving a term as President of Willowbrook Country Club. During his retirement he helped at St. Bernadette's and Mother of Sorrow's schools. He loved to golf, working in his yard, but more than anything he loved to be with his family, especially his grandkids - who enjoyed his endless supply of chocolate! They were the light of his life. WILLIAM JOHN O'BLOCK, SR. "PUNK" William John “Punk” O'Block, Sr., age 87, of Plum Borough, went to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, March 29, 2020. He was born January 1, 1933 in Plum to the late Frank and Millie (Stanga) O'Block. Beloved husband of the late Nancy Lee (Fabrick) O'Block for 53 years; loving father of Kim (Sam) Sarandis of Monroeville, William Jr. (Betsy) O'Block of Plum and Barry (Tina) O'Block of Murrysville; adored grandfather “Pap” of John and Samantha Sarandis and Billy (Kristen), Austin, Alec, Tyler, Brady, Barry Jr., Brooke, Blaze, Brock and the late Blake “Blakey” O'Block; brother of Nancy (the late William) Fiala and the late Frank (Lee) O'Block, George (Patricia) O'Block and Joan (surviving Ron) Hromyak; also survived by nieces and nephews. For most of his life, Bill operated heavy equipment, and in 2003 retired from the Plum Borough School District. He enjoyed polka music and spending time with his cherished grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. Bill's witty sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew him. His beautiful, compassionate and kind heart will be greatly missed. He served as corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. A private funeral service for immediate family was held on April 1, 2020, with interment in Plum Creek Cemetery. PETER WAYNE THOMPSON Age 48, of North Fayette, surrounded by his loving family, at home on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Beloved husband for 14 years of Annie Renee (Beaumont) Thompson; proud father of Brody and Wyatt Thompson; devoted son of Patricia (Demikle) and the late Wayne "Pete" Thompson; cherished brother of Traci (Jason) Hayes; loving uncle of Tyler, Morgan, Hunter, Johnny, Grace and Luke; also survived by many caring friends particularly his best friend Chris Mooney who unselfishly gave countless hours assisting Annie as a caregiver. Pete was a graduate of Robert Morris University where he played ice hockey for the Colonials. He worked for Merkle, Inc. as a Senior Director of Technology and his family is extremely thankful for all the love and support of the Merkle organization during this difficult time. Pete was one of the most skilled adult hockey players in the Pittsburgh area, playing in 5 or 6 leagues at any given time, including the NAHL-PGH and CVHL at Ice Castle, RMU Iron Lung leagues and leagues at Mt. Lebanon Ice Rink. Pete was also invited to play at many weekend tournaments which he enjoyed with numerous hockey buddies. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life Service in the future. FLORENCE J. WILSON Beloved mother, grandmother and aunt was called home to the Lord on Monday, March 30, 2020. In addition to her parents, three sisters and two brothers, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Wilson; daughter, Nanette Kowaleski (survived by Henry); son, Florent Wilson (survived by Diane); and grandson, David J. Griffiths II. She is survived by her daughter, Florence Griffiths (David); four grandsons, two granddaughters, four great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; her nephew, James Wissinger (Josie); and many other nieces and nephews. RAY M. JACKSON, JR. Age 70, of Scott Twp., passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020. Ray was the beloved husband and soul mate of Nancy (Oehm) Jackson for over 24 years; son of the late Dorothy (Waters) and Ray M. Jackson, Sr.; loving father of Justin (Kelly) Short, Shawn (Tara) Spader, and the late A.J. Spader; devoted and adoring Pap of Juliann, Helen, Aidan, Maggie, Lilli, Piper and Addie; brother of Dorothy (Jim) Gazdik and Sue Epstein; loving family of Pam Missonak, Kim and Ed Ogden, and Sarah and Kirk Molstad; also survived by nieces and nephews; and his fur-baby, Sammy Jo. The family would like to especially thank all of the staff at Meadowcrest Healthcare for their loving care of Ray. Ray was a lifetime member of the Bower Hill Fire Department, where he served as lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief. He D.J.-ed on the side for events like oldies dances and New Year's Eve at Bower Hill FD. Ray was a licensed pilot and volunteer for the Volunteer Pilots Association, where he would transport organs for organ donation. He was in the first class of paramedics in Pittsburgh, and was one of the first paid paramedics with Tri-Community. A graduate of Youngstown University in 1974 with a business degree, Ray went on to work for Tom Jayson where he was the National Manager of VIP 2001 Club. He started his own company in 1981, Eastern Continental Sales, which installed professional sound and special effects lighting for many nightclubs, restaurants and churches in Pittsburgh, as well as businesses like Pac-Sun, Hollister Co., Disney Stores, and PPG Place. All of Ray's sons worked for him at one time. Ray and Nancy were heavily involved with their sons' Chartiers Valley hockey teams, for which they developed a CV Hockey Player Scholarship Fund, which is still in place today. Additionally, Ray spearheaded the parent announcing of high school hockey games, by becoming the first parent to do so with CV Hockey. Ray was a talented BBQ master---he owned a BBQ restaurant in Morgantown, WV, participated many years in the South Park Rib Cook-Off, hosted huge neighborhood BBQ gatherings, and appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly for winning their BBQ Competition. Ray was truly a renaissance man---a business entrepreneur, a community volunteer, a BBQ master and a devoted family man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. JOHN D. "JACK" McGINTY Of East Pittsburgh, for the past seven years a resident of St. Therese Apartments in Munhall, age 92, died on Friday, April 3, 2020. Dear brother of Mary Jane (late Gilbert) Bartman of West Homestead. Treasured uncle of Beverly (Robert) Mannion of West Homestead and Dr. Barbara (Dr. Ernest Moy) Bartman of MD. Proud great-uncle of Justin Moy. Jack was a WWII Army veteran and a graduate of East Pittsburgh High School. He was a member of the East Pittsburgh Economic Development Corporation and the former St. William Church and Holy Cross Parish. Jack was a loyal resident of East Pittsburgh and was a regular attendee of borough council meetings. He loved to stroll the sidewalks of East Pittsburgh and was an excellent gardener, known for his beautiful tomatoes. Jack also used his gardening skills to beautify East Pittsburgh. He planted numerous daffodils along the side slope of the Westinghouse Bridge exit ramp and cared for the flowers at the borough's entrance sign there. Those daffodils have been blooming beautifully for the past week, a timely tribute to Jack. A few daffodils can also be spotted along Linden Avenue where Jack contributed his most remarkable and work-intensive project. For a few years, Jack uprooted scores of wild daylilies from the wooded areas around East Pittsburgh and North Braddock. He re-planted those daylilies along Linden Avenue and their blossoms flourish every May and June. Those daylilies will be an annual floral remembrance of Jack. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Jack's Mass of Christian Burial will be at a later date. Jack's viewing and Blessing Service will be private to his family. GENE SMITH Gene Smith passed away at 8:50 a.m. on March 30th, 2020. Born in 1920, Gene was part of “The Greatest Generation.” She was a teenager in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania during the Great Depression. She attended Ohio Wesleyan and then worked in Pittsburgh as a Drafts Woman during World War II. In the 1950's and 1960's, she worked in the fashion industry when women were just getting into the workforce outside the home. She was a runway model, Fashion Director for Kaufmann's in Pittsburgh, the color girl for the Brown Shoe Company, worked in real estate, and in her later years was an ardent supporter of the Pittsburgh Opera Company. She was on the Opera Board but she was so much more doing everything from leading the backstage tours at the Benedum to having front row seats for every performance! She was famous for hosting parties at her beloved Genoda Farms. Perhaps the most notable being the Pittsburgh Opera Tailgate celebrating director Tito Capobianco's birthday. She lived independently until she was 99 years old and celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family on February 14, 2020. She is survived by her son, Jacob Brown and his wife, Elizabeth O'Brien; stepson, Gary Smith, MD and his wife, Karen Smith; grandchildren, Shane Brown of Boulder, CO and Katherine Brown of New York City; great-grandchildren Travis and Kyle Brown both of Boulder, CO. She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Brown; sister, Rhoda; her parents, Hazel and Frank Malone; first husband, JK Brown; second husband, Herbert Sachs; and third husband, Edmund C. ROBERT J. ELIZEUS, SR. Of Baldwin, formerly of Monroeville, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Loving father of Victoria (Doug) Hassler of TX and the late Robert J. Elizeus, Jr.; cherished grandfather of Heather (Austin) Hassler-Courmier and Jessica Hassler; brother of Sue (Dale) Campbell and Judy (Chet) Price. Preceded in death by siblings; Frances Ann (the late Pat) Pino and John Elizeus; his parents, Johnny Elizeus and Marie Kosmach; and his step-mother, Stella Bajgier; former spouse of Joanne Pribanic Wycoff; also survived by nieces and nephews. ROBERT A. (BOB) KARWOSKI Robert A. (Bob) Karwoski, 67, of Franklin Park, passed away at home on Friday, April 3, 2020, after a lengthy battle. A fighter, with a “never give up” attitude, Bob was a victim of complications from a brain hemorrhage he suffered 10 years ago. To the very end, he was an inspiration to everyone around him. Bob was the beloved husband of Beverly Rees Karwoski; loving brother of James (Marta) and Thomas (Debra) Karwoski. Born on June 11, 1952, Bob was a graduate of Freedom High School and Mansfield University. He was a devoted law enforcement officer for more than 40 years, starting as a part-time 911 dispatcher in Beaver County, a part-time patrolman for Freedom, and a Beaver County Narcotics Detective. He finished his career as the Special Agent in Charge for the Norfolk-Southern Police Department. Bob was a member of St. Alexis Catholic Church in Wexford and many national and local professional organizations including the Fraternal Order of Police, International Police Chiefs, Western Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police, and many others. Bob was unique and bigger than life. He could fill a room with his personality and wicked sense of humor. He had a big heart and was always helping family, neighbors and friends, His motto was to always cause chaos and commotion. He was a master of it and he loved sharing the intricacies of that with his coworkers, friends and family. He loved sports, especially Pitt football and basketball and the Steelers. He went to the YMCA religiously and enjoyed working out. He came alive at the beach and was so proud of his house in Myrtle Beach, SC. He would often be the first person on the beach and the last one to leave. More than anything “Big Cat” loved his Harley and would take off on long rides with his Riding Friends on a moment's notice. There was never a dull moment with Bob. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Raphael Karwoski of Freedom and many aunts and uncles. Bob has a very large family. In addition to his wife, brothers and sisters-in-law, he is survived by two nephews JT Karwoski (Tracy) of Hopewell and Jeff Karwoski of Beaver; two nieces Dina Karwoski of Tampa, FL and Jill (Lon) Valentine of New Brighton; godson Nicholas Yanyanin of Pittsburgh; goddaughter Annisce Ramanna of Hopewell; two great-nephews, Brendan and Brady Valentine and a great-niece Maisie Karwoski; special cousins Nancy (Mitch) Yanyanin of Baden; Anthony (Brandi) Budris of Hopewell; Kristen Budris of Pittsburgh; good friends Robert (Deb) Ramanna of Hopewell; Mike (Liz) Magill of McCandless, Herman “Red” (Donna) Powell of Beaver and many, many other cousins and close friends. The family would like to especially thank “Bob's Angels” Kim Neill, Linsey Dengler, Anthony and Kristen Parker, Diane Brodmerkel, Lacey Hoffman, Danielle Turk, and Jola Meinert. Their love, care and support has been exceptional and very much appreciated. Bob truly loved them and appreciated everything they did to help him. LESLIE ANN PALMER Leslie Ann Palmer, 47, of Mt. Lebanon, died suddenly on March 29, 2020. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, March 5, 1973, the daughter of William T. Palmer and the late Carol Palmer. She loved swimming, camping and playing softball for Allegheny CC. She had been employed by DHL and Airborne Express. All who knew her benefited from her hugs, kisses, and her kind and caring personality. She volunteered for the elderly and often fed her neighbors with hugs and food. Most of all, she had a deep affection for animals and spread her love and big heart to them, especially her beloved kitty, “Rain”. Her brother Billy will miss the “best sister a brother could have”, and says she made him be the best man he could be. Her sister, Susan, will miss her constant companionship, love, cooking and laughter. Her family, neighbors, pets, and friends will miss her so much, especially her dear friend, Pam Clister. Interment will be at Queen of Heart cemetery beside her mother, Carol Palmer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to any animal shelter. A memorial service will be held at a later date. MARGARET COYNE On April 3, 2020, Margaret Coyne reunited with her eternal dance partner, her husband, Michael in heaven. Margaret was born on November 30, 1936 to the late Louis and Pauline Cenis of Carnegie, Pa. On February 1, 1958, she married the love of her life, Michael J. Coyne Jr. and they celebrated 56 years together before he passed in 2014. She leaves behind her beloved children, Michael J. Coyne III (Karen) and Paula (Fred) Wade, her grandchildren, Mallory (John) Gergely, Michael (Bryanna) Gallucci, Emily (Matt) Chambers, Madison Gallucci, Maggie (Tyler) Matthews, and Michael J. Coyne IV; and seven great-grandchildren, John, Haley, and Jacob Gergely, Baylee and Rylee Gallucci, Maverick Chambers and Lila Matthews. She is sadly missed by her fur babies, Lizzie and Fido. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, granddaughter Shannon Coyne and fur baby, Faboom. Arrangements have been entrusted to JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, 15236. Because of restrictions due to the corona virus outbreak, a public viewing and Funeral Service will not be held at this time, but a memorial service will be scheduled when friends and family can safely travel and gather. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending your memorial contributions to Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, 300 East Swissvale Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218 in Margaret's memory.
