Mr. Mertz was the husband of the late Alice Marie (Klingensmith) Mertz for over sixty years; father of Virginia Mertz (Richard Cvetetic), Joseph Mertz, Jr. (Rebecca), David Mertz (Jacqueline), Mary Alice Mertz (Rick Wagner); brother of Helen Mertz and the late Virginia Mertz, Katherine (Mertz) Rafferty, and Marion (a.k.a. Sr. Virginia) Mertz; grandfather of Nicole, Joseph, Michael, Margaret, Kristina Mertz; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Joe was born in Etna, PA in 1925 to the late Joseph Martin Mertz and Mary (Miller) Mertz. He was a graduate of the pioneer class at North Catholic High School and served in the Navy with the Seabees during the Second World War, helping to build Subic Bay and other strategic outposts in the Paci?c. He returned home to Pittsburgh and had a long career with Bell Telephone. A skilled craftsman and avid gardener, Joe liked nothing more than to spend time putzing at his workbench or cultivating and canning fruits and vegetables. He also enjoyed bowling, gol?ng, and spending time with his family at Chapel Gate Swim Club and in Stone Harbor, New Jersey. At the end of his life, Joe received special care from Diane Altaher who he considered a gem. BELLIN MARIE A. (CHIODO) Age 84, unexpectedly but peacefully at home on January 23, 2019, of Green Tree. She was the beloved wife of William C. Bellin; mother of Joseph F. (deceased) and Elaine M. Bellin (Phyllis Coontz); grandmother of Joshua W. and David L. Bellin; and beloved sister of the late Sam Chiodo (Charmin). Marie was the loving aunt to 18 nieces and nephews. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter. A faithful and devout Catholic, she attended Sunday masses regularly at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery and more recently and closer to home, Marion Manor Chapel in Green Tree. In the mid 1970s, she discovered the spiritual and calming music of the Monks of Weston Priory, Weston Vermont. She continued her travels there throughout her life, and loved sharing the Brothers' music and teachings with others and would regularly take family and friends to the Priory in Vermont. There was nothing she loved more than spending Sunday afternoons over a traditional Italian meal and Steelers game with her family. Marie was a gifted and accomplished singer and as a young woman sang in the assemble of the CLO with such notables as Shirley Jones. In addition to her love of music, Marie was a die hard Steelers fan and rarely missed a game. One of her fondest stories about the Steelers was seeing the Immaculate Reception in 1972 when the Steelers beat the Oakland Raiders in the last 30 seconds of the game. Like many Pittsburghers, she believed the win was divine intervention. She also followed the Pirates and Penguins. After Rivers Casino opened in 2009, Marie could often be found in the Poker Room playing Texas Hold 'Em and came to be known as the Poker Queen winning several poker tournaments there. There will be no visitation. ELLWOOD PUDGE N. Age 78, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2019 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born in Waco, TX on February 1, 1940 to Virgil and Donna Ellwood, he spent most of his formative years in Watertown, SD and later Aberdeen, SD. He was valedictorian of his high school class and participated in theatre, the glee club, and debate club. An avid reader with an excellent memory, he attended Johns Hopkins University where he studied Pre-med. Following his graduation, Pudge made a living teaching nursing school classes in Baltimore, MD. Encouraged by his father to do more than just teach with his degree, he accepted a position with the pharmaceutical company Hoffman-La Roche and relocated to Richmond, VA. Using his charisma and oratory skills, he rose within Roche to a position as high as Vice President of Sales for the entire northeast United States territory within the laboratory services division of the company. He later used his experience to work for other pharmaceutical companies in the northeast and serve as a mentor for young pharmaceutical sales professionals. During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, he resided in Richmond, VA; Pittsburgh, PA; Allentown, PA; and ?nally, Madbury, NH. For the majority of his career he resided in Pittsburgh, PA in Mt. Lebanon township. After retirement from pharmaceutical sales, he returned to Aberdeen, SD to assist in caring for his parents. He served in a variety of elected positions within Aberdeen's premiere service organization, The Lions Club of Aberdeen, and enjoyed working with his friends to improve the lives of those people the organization touches. He also served as a substitute teacher at local schools and shared his business acumen with students at Northern University. He was an active member of the North Highland United Methodist Church. He was a patron of the arts. His favorite activities later in life included spending time reading at the library, spending time with his many friends and acquaintances, collecting art and antiques, working with the Lions Club, but most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren in Baltimore, MD, Raleigh, NC, and Tybee Island, GA. He is survived by his children, Allison Schaefer, Amy Chrisman, Alexander Ellwood, Taylor Ellwood, Lindsay Derucher, and Christopher Ellwood; and grandchildren, Josh Schaefer, Daniel Schaefer, Savannan Schaefer, Tyler Chrisman, Trey Chrisman, Nicholas Ellwood, Ryan Ellwood, Noah Derucher, Emma Derucher, Fiona Derucher, and Owen Ellwood. Per his wishes, his ashes will be buried next to his parents at the Village Cemetery in Canby, MN. SNYDER THOMAS J. Age 78, of Butler Township, formerly of Gibsonia, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler, after a short illness. He was born May 7, 1940, son of late Wilbert J. Snyder and Margaret E. (Weidner) Snyder. Tom was a retired truck driver for Yellow Freight Systems and a member of Teamsters Local 249 for over 25 years. He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church of Butler, and also a former member of St. Catherine of Sweden Catholic Church in Hampton Township for 30 years, where he served as an usher for 20 years. He also was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1962 to 1968. Tom enjoyed ?shing and gardening, and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He is survived by his loving wife, Antoinette (Toni) Tronko Snyder, whom he married Nov. 22, 1962. Also survived by three children, Keith T. Snyder and his wife, Melissa Snyder, of Chicora, Kimberly M. Snyder of Baden, and Christopher L. Snyder and his wife, Linda Snyder of Ross Township; also survived by one brother, Gerard J. (Barbara) Snyder; four sisters, Joan E. Lippold, Margaret A. Hancock, Marian P. (Mel) Audley, and Charlotte J. WENKERT ALBERT On Sunday, January 27, 2019; Al Wenkert passed away after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of 69 years to Rita (Pearlstein) Wenkert; beloved father to Harry Wenkert (Barbara Ginsburg) and Terri Sweet (Sy); brother of the late Ruth Golden; and grandfather to Daniel Sweet and Beth Sweet. He was a much loved and admired uncle to several nieces and nephews. Al was a most likable and friendly individual who spent 30 plus years with his Primanti Brothers breakfast club enjoying the company of his friends, Joe, Kenny, Toni and the late Rick. His favorite pastime was watching his beloved Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. Al lived a long 92 years of life, which the family attributes to his excellent medical team of Dr. Gary Lemoncelli, Dr. Alan Steckel, Dr. Saul Silver and Dr. Jing-Zhou Hou. ATHENS BETTY V. On January 26, 2019, Betty, or as some called her, Vasho, grew up part of a vibrant Greek community in Oakland at a time when the Pittsburgh Pirates played baseball down the street. She was a proud graduate of Schenley High School and even into her late years could break into the ?ght song of her Dear Schenley High. Betty was married to Nicholas G. Athens, who died many years before her and whose memory she often invoked. She is also the grandmother of Jim, Christin, Kate, Maisie, and Louise and recently became great-grandmother to Harriet (Hattie); she is also survived by her sister, Demetra (Mitzie) Andrews; as well as her children, Maria, George (Ellen), Tom (Deborah), and Jim (Kip); and niece, Maria. Betty will always be remembered for her keen eye for fashion, deep compassion, good humor and bouncing in the waves of Ocean City New Jersey with any of her willing grandchildren. She will be laid to rest at Nick's side on a hill outside of San Francisco overlooking the Paci?c Ocean. Friends will be received at JOHN A. MASENGILL RUTH ZERLINA Age 89 of Murrysville, passed away on January 26, 2019. Ruth was born in Turtle Creek on April 15, 1929, the daughter of Edward George and Helen Ostien George. Ruth was married to Robert Gardner, who preceded her in death. She married James Masengill on April 1, 1982. He also preceded her in death. Ruth was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Murrysville. She retired after 23 years with Mine Safety Appliances Company. After retirement she represented many companies passing out various samples in different stores. Ruth is survived by one son, R. Alan Gardner (Pam); one daughter, R. Kathleen Barrett; ?ve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister, Judith Ragan (Willis Ebner); sister-in-law, Alice George; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, Edward George; a sister, Mildred Glass; and a granddaughter. Ruth would like to thank her hospice RN Sarah and her caregivers Jennifer, Fran, Margie, and Janet. Friends will be received from 10 - 11 a.m., on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Murrysville, where a funeral service will immediately follow with the Rev.
