She liked spending time with her grandchildren and her dogs. She worked as a clerk for Hills Department Store, Heidelburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eckels, in 2015; and son, Robert Samuel Eckels, in 1986. UMSTOT WILLIAM GILMORE Age 99, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Cumberland, MD, passed away on January 22, 2019, at UPMC-Presbyterian. Born on May 15, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clarence Daniel Pat and Ruth May (House) Umstot. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor M. (Robinson) Umstot in 1992. William was one of the last surviving members of the class of 1937 of Fort Hill High School, its ?rst graduating class. On August 16, 1940, he married his wife, Elinor, and together they enjoyed a remarkable, loving relationship that was an example to be followed. William served his country in WWII from 1943-45, serving as Staff Sergeant Third U.S. Army, Provost Marshall Section. In 2010, he was able to return to Europe to retrace the route of the Third Army, under Gen. George Patton, from Normandy to Germany. He most enjoyed Paris! He worked as an independent grocer with his father; in banking at Cumberland Savings Bank, now First United Bank & Trust; and as a cost analyst at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, an R&D facility of Hercules Powder Co., now part of Orbital ATK. An involved member of the community and volunteer, William was a member of the following organizations: Queen City Lodge #131 AF & AM, Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite, Ali Ghan Shrine (for whose Drum & Bugle Corp he had learned to play the snare drum), McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Easter Star (Past Patron), American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Nancy L. Umstot Barry and husband, Robert, of Pittsburgh, Ruth Elinor Umstot Lewis and husband, J. Jimmy now joins his wife, Marie Uggie, in heaven; they were married for more than 60 years. He was very proud of bowling a 300 game. His passions in life next to spending time with family and friends were working in his garden and doing things around the house. Richard was a member of the Merchant Marines during World War II. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were an infant brother, Jerry Lunak; and a brother, Rudolph Lunak, a ?ghter pilot that was killed in World War II. ATHENS BETTY V. On January 26, 2019, Betty, or as some called her, Vasho, grew up part of a vibrant Greek community in Oakland at a time when the Pittsburgh Pirates played baseball down the street. She was a proud graduate of Schenley High School and even into her late years could break into the ?ght song of her Dear Schenley High. Betty was married to Nicholas G. Athens, who died many years before her and whose memory she often invoked. She is also the grandmother of Jim, Christin, Kate, Maisie, and Louise and recently became great-grandmother to Harriet (Hattie); she is also survived by her sister, Demetra (Mitzie) Andrews; as well as her children, Maria, George (Ellen), Tom (Deborah), and Jim (Kip); and niece, Maria. WENKERT ALBERT On Sunday, January 27, 2019; Al Wenkert passed away after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of 69 years to Rita (Pearlstein) Wenkert; beloved father to Harry Wenkert (Barbara Ginsburg) and Terri Sweet (Sy); brother of the late Ruth Golden; and grandfather to Daniel Sweet and Beth Sweet. He was a much loved and admired uncle to several nieces and nephews. Al was a most likable and friendly individual who spent 30 plus years with his Primanti Brothers breakfast club enjoying the company of his friends, Joe, Kenny, Toni and the late Rick. His favorite pastime was watching his beloved Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. MIKULA THOMAS S. Age 70, of North Huntingdon, died Sunday, January 27, 2019. He was born November 2, 1948 in Uniontown, PA, the son of the late Matthew and Helen Bealko Mikula. He was an avid golfer and ?sherman, but his grandchildren were the joy of his life. He was a career salesman and after his retirement he enjoyed driving for Lyft. Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Gloria Jean Brick Mikula; sons, Brian (Sherri) Mikula of Jefferson Hills, Eric Mikula of Shadyside; daughter, Kelly (Thomas) Blaze of Elizabeth; stepchildren, Jennifer (David) Kratzenberg of Latrobe; Lawrence Brick of Port Vue; nine grandchildren; brothers, Michael (Marie) Mikula of Olney, MD, James (Dennis) Mikula of Ligonier; sisters, Carol Sis (Thomas) Sikora of Uniontown, Mary Dutch (Andrew) Strucula of Uniontown and Jacqueline (Thomas) Verney of Bowling Springs, PA; also many nieces and nephews.
