WISSNER ROBERT J. Age 74, of West View, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a lengthy illness on Thursday, January 31, 2019. Beloved husband, of nearly 49 years on Valentine's Day, of Elizabeth "Betty-Jo" (Jack); loving father of Roberta J. Kunkel (John), Rebecca J. Born (David), Brian J. (Chanel), Bonnie J. Vatovec (Ryan), Sarabeth "Beth" Scheller (Joseph Pritchard), and Bradley J. (Robert Gomez); proud grandfather of 11; brother of Howard Wissner, Christine Bennett, and Diane Firko; son of the late Howard and Victoria (Stazer) Wissner; also survived by loving relatives and friends. Always warming the room with his smile and good nature, Bob reveled in the simple pleasures of good food, a quick step polka, and celebrating his children's and grandchildren's ethnic performances. SMITH HARRY DARNELL Was born on July 27, 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Shadyside Hospital. Family and Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 12:30 p.m. -1:30 p.m., at COSTON FUNERAL HOMES, INC., 427 Lincoln Avenue, where Memorial Service will begin at 1:30 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Harriet Timpson Smith. He is survived by his companion and partner, Wilda Jones; sister, Runette Brown; and brother, Melvin T. Smith; nieces, Felice Johnson (Larry Johnson) and Kimyarte Smith; nephew, Kristopher Brown; great-nephew, Brandon Johnson (Sanoma Johnson); and great-niece, Irielle Smith. And not to be excluded are great-great- nieces, Logan Marie Johnson and Bryce Denise Johnson; along with a number of cousins and members of the Jones family. Harry graduated from Perry High School and soon after joined the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, he became a certi?ed sous chef, he joined his brother, Melvin and stayed in San Diego, California where he lived for over 30 years working as a sous chef. He then relocated back home to Pittsburgh, PA in 2008 where he worked in various restaurants and facilities as a cook and sous chef. Harry led a quiet and purposeful life with a dry weird sense of humor. He worked hard at his craft and took much pride and derived immense joy in his ability to feed others well and their enjoyment of his skills. He had a vivid memory that worked to his credit and detriment. Harry could be stubborn and yet he had such a very sensitive side. He will be missed. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

Beloved wife for 66 years of John J. “Whitey” Boyce; loving mother of Donald (Sharon) Boyce of Myrtle Beach; dear grandmother of Amy Bates of North Versailles, April (Tom) Hanahan of Monroeville, Camera Holycross of Ohio and Michael Hlebowicz of Oklahoma; great-grandmother of Haley and Kelsey. Lucy was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Orosz, Irma Davies and June Balint. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Lucy was a retired receptionist and secretary from Westinghouse Nuclear Center in Monroeville. She enjoyed camping at the Slippery Rock Campground and at the Briarcliff Campground in Myrtle Beach. COLLIGAN FR . JAMES P. MM On Thursday, January 31, 2019, age 90. Born in Pittsburgh, PA to Paul and Beatrice Flynn Colligan. Brother of John T. Colligan, Elaine MacIntyre and the late Vivian Sweeney, and Robert, Michael P. and Thomas Colligan; also survived by nieces and nephews. Father Colligan graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1946. He entered Maryknoll in 1948. Seminary Studies earned him a Bachelor's in Philosophy and a Master's in Religious Education. After Ordination in 1955, he was assigned to Japan. Language study and parish assignments occupied his early years, including an assignment as Pastor and Kindergarten Principal in Mikasa, Hokkaido. Meanwhile, he provided articles and photos of Japan to church publications abroad. Assigned in 1966 to full time writing and photography, he spent three semesters at Syracuse University to earn a Master's in journalism. Returning to Japan in 1968, he obtained Japanese Government accreditation as correspondent of the US Bishop's news service in Washington, DC. He spent a year as Tokyo Bureau Chief for the Union of Catholic Asian News (UCAN) before resuming af?liation with the US Bishops' Agency, Catholic News Service (CNS). He was elected three times chairman of Foreign Press in Japan (FPIJ). For a decade, he contributed a regular column for the Japan Christian Quarterly. He was co-editor to their book Christianity in Japan. He provided editorial materials on Asia for Maryknoll; compiled a history of the Society's presence among the ethnic Japanese; and a summary, with photos, on the Church works in Bangladesh. A member of the Catholic Press Association, the Overseas Press Club and the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, which awarded him a life membership in 1994. Fr. Colligan was assigned to the United States in 1997, in Los Angeles. He assisted at St. Francis Xavier Parish and its Japanese Catholic Mission. In 2003, he was assigned to Retirement and returned to New York in 2012. Friends received at McCABE BROS., INC. BUTCAVAGE THOMAS A. Of Monroeville, age 88, on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Lorraine (Hazinski) Butcavage for 54 years; loving father of Jeannine (Martin) Szostek, Anita (David) Rogers and Thomas Butcavage; cherished “Papa” to his grandchildren, David, Isabel, Ben and Lucy; brother of Lawrence (Edie) Butcavage of FL and 11 other siblings who preceded Tom in death. Tom is also survived by many nieces and nephews. After high school in Luzerne County, Tom entered the U.S. Navy for service during the Korean War. After the war, Tom attended Colgate University on the G.I. Bill where he played football, was a member and President of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and graduated with a degree in Psychology. Tom went to work for Westinghouse and transferred from the Lester, PA plant to the East Pittsburgh plant where he retired as a Production Manager with over 30 years of service. Tom enjoyed participating in sports, especially golf, tennis and snow skiing. He also was a believer in volunteering. While living in the Philadelphia area, Tom was a member and Commander of his American Legion Post; and, in retirement he volunteered with the former Forbes Hospice and for the Monroeville Meals- on-Wheels program while being a devout member of North American Martyrs Church. Tom's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at North American Martyrs Church, Monroeville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., followed by a Presentation of Military Honors. NOVAK MARIE Beloved wife and mother, went to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ, on January 29, 2019. She was born on July 11, 1931, to Ann and Luke Mezzapesa in McKees Rocks, PA. Marie grew up in McKees Rocks surrounded by a large and loving extended family. On May 16, 1953, Marie married the love of her life, Edward Novak and moved to Greentree where they raised their three children and faithfully supported them in their numerous activities. Mom's greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She loved cooking, baking and entertaining - all talents that she inherited from her Italian family. Marie had a deep and devoted love of God and centered her life around her faith. She was an active member of St. Margaret's parish in Greentree and participated in many church organizations and activities including serving as Secretary of the Christians Mothers for several years. In 2007, Marie and Ed moved to Scottsdale, AZ to be close to their daughter, Mary Ellen. They soon acclimated to their desert home at Scottsdale House where they made new and loving friends and joined a new parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Mom especially loved socializing with the ladies in her neighborhood community and getting together with the women of Sodality. Mom was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was always kind and generous and the ?rst to lend a helping hand to those in need. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband, Ed; and is survived by her children, Sue (Mike), Ed (Jodee) and Mary Ellen (Carl); and her grandchildren, Luke (Meg), Emily, Carl (Stephanie), Jenna, and Troy; and great- grandchild, Carl V. LARSEN GAYLORD ROSS Age 80, of Sewickley, formerly of Pocono Manor, PA and Jackson, MN, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 31, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was born in Jackson, MN on October 18, 1938, to the late Sydney M. and Bernice (Seger) Larsen. He married, his high school sweetheart on May 27, 1961, Ruth Ann (Waswo) Larsen. They had three wonderful children Douglas Larsen (Katie) of Sewickley, Molly Larsen Carpenter (Bill) of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Christopher A. Larsen (Bethany) of Peekskill, and ?ve cherished grandchildren Abby, Riley and Sydney Larsen, Lucy and Elly Carpenter. Gaylord was retired as Manager of Harvest States Cooperative Transportation. He was a 1956 graduate of Jackson MN High School, attended Dunwoody Institute and the University of Minnesota. He had a passion for golf, biking, cross country skiing, and relished time at the beach in the company of family. He was also a skilled wood worker and constructed furniture and did extensive home renovations. He was involved in numerous mission trips with youth groups with the Valley Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon. He also loved sports, following the Minnesota Vikings and University of Minnesota Gophers, as well as attending many of his grandchildren's sporting events, from basketball, to tennis and lacrosse, regardless of where they were held. His life touched many people and he will be greatly missed. KARNAVAS JACK A. Age 87, of Moon Township, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2019, in Masonic Village at Sewickley surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 12, 1932, in Sewickley, a son of the late Andrew and Sophie Pitaka Karnavas. He owned and operated Karnavas Vending for 48 years, was a 50 year member of the Ambridge Masonic Lodge 701 F&AM, and a longtime member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. NEUNDORF KENNETH W. Age 62, of Washington, died Thursday, January 31, 2019, in Pittsburgh, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall on January 9, 2019. He was born June 9, 1956, in Washington, a son of Roger and Margaret Poland Neundorf, of Selma, NC, both survive. Mr. Neundorf was an very active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Shadyside. He was also active with the ELCA Southwestern PA Synod. He was a 1974 graduate of McGuffey High School and a 1978 graduate of Waynesburg University. He went on to obtain his masters degree in education. Following his graduation from Waynesburg, he worked as a group home coordinator for ARC and a substitute teacher until obtaining a full-time teaching position in the McGuffey School District. He taught there until his retirement in 2016. Mr. Neundorf was an advocate for people, especially youth, who identi?ed as sexual minorities. He served on the board of directors for many organizations including the Washington County Gay Straight Alliance and Reconciling Works. He had been an umpire for the Ten Mile Youth Baseball Association. He was a member of the Steel City Bowling League. He enjoyed presidential trivia and history as well as travel. He had been to 49 of the 50 American states as well as Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Austria. On August 4, 1984, in Washington, he married Brenda McDowell, who survives. He and Brenda separated in August of 1999, but remained close friends until his death. In November, 1997, he came out as a gay man. In 2010, he entered a relationship with a same-gender partner, “Kellen” Galvin, who also survives. He is also survived by a brother, Steven (Jill) Neundorf, of Somerset, PA; a sister, Sherry (Larry) Edwards, of Selma, NC; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Peggy Ann, who died in infancy. Friends will be received, 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday and 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday in the PIATT AND BARNHILL FUNERAL HOME, 420 Locust Ave, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2019, in St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 304 Morewood Ave., Pittsburgh, with Pastor Ross Carmichael of?ciating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park. KRUL JAC MICHAEL JOHN Of Pittsburgh, PA, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 25, 2019 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness. Born on October 26, 1955 in Pittsburgh, he was 63. He is survived by his parents, John and Mary Ann Kruljac of Pittsburgh; brother, Dr. Stephen Kruljac (Judy) of McMurray, PA, and Dr. Catherine Quas Kruljac (ex-spouse) of Bend, OR; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and treasured friends. He was a graduate of North Catholic High School and Duquesne University, where he performed as a member of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans. Michael was a free-spirited person who embraced challenges and adventure. He traveled throughout the country, residing in New York, Los Angeles, Oregon, British Columbia and Alaska. He spent the bulk of his career as a pilot and ?ight instructor for several private airlines, including, and most recently, the Catalina Flying Boats Air Freight Service .Michael was also a gifted author, writing several short stories and publishing A Day That God Made, a novella centering on his near-fatal crash as a transport pilot in the Alaskan tundra. In addition, he was a talented artist and lover of music - Italian Opera, particularly. He spoke ?uent Italian and dreamed of one day settling in a small mountain village on the east coast of Italy where he maintained a residence. Carson, Jr.; grandfather of Che', Christian, Evan and Avery; son of the late Elmer and Frances (Fenner) Carson; brother of Stanley Carson, Vincent Carson, Wayne Carson, Bradley Carson, David Carson, Lisa Carson, Lori Woodson, Lois Carson, Sharon Mosley, and the late Thomas and Jeffrey Carson.
